In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
The reverent will take heed. The wicked will avoid it.
God has decreed in Quran that His reminders and proofs are exclusive for those who believe in Him and reverence Him:
[20:2] We did not reveal the Quran to you, to cause you any hardship.
[20:3] Only to remind the reverent.
[50:45] We are fully aware of everything they utter, while you have no power over them. Therefore, remind with this Quran, those who reverence My warnings.
[51:55] And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers.
He has also illustrated in Quran the reactions to His reminders and proofs by both believers and disbelievers. Those who recognize God and expect to meet Him appreciate the reminders no matter how repetitive they are. They perceive them as gifts of love and mercy from the Most Gracious that they are both delighted and eager to receive any time. They do not have second thoughts when it comes to listening to and reflecting on the divine wisdom. They NEVER respond to the reminders by: "we have known that and we have heard it before, or "we are in no need for them." They do not take the reminders personally. They constantly fight their egos so their hearts become softened and reassured every time they are reminded by God's signs and examples:
[40:13] He is the One who continuously shows you His proofs, and sends down to you from the sky provisions. Only those who totally submit will be able to take heed.
[35:18] ...The only people to heed your warnings are those who reverence their Lord, even when alone in their privacy, and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat). Whoever purifies his soul, does so for his own good. To GOD is the final destiny.
[87:9] Therefore, you shall remind; perhaps the reminder will benefit.
[87:10] The reverent will take heed.
[74:54] Indeed, this is a reminder.
[74:55] For those who wish to take heed.
[30:22] Among His proofs are the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors. In these, there are signs for the knowledgeable.
[29:43] We cite these examples for the people, and none appreciate them except the knowledgeable.
[35:28] Also, the people, the animals, and the livestock come in various colors. This is why the people who truly reverence GOD are those who are knowledgeable. GOD is Almighty, Forgiving.
As for those who choose disbelief, they let their ego takes over their souls. Arrogantly, they fail to heed the warnings. God's reminders only cause them to be more argumentative, and unappreciative:
[18:56] We only send the messengers as simply deliverers of good news, as well as warners. Those who disbelieve argue with falsehood to defeat the truth, and they take My proofs and warnings in vain.
[31:32] .... None discards our revelations except those who are betrayers, unappreciative.
[87:9] Therefore, you shall remind; perhaps the reminder will benefit.
[87:10] The reverent will take heed.
[87:11] The wicked will avoid it.
[37:12] While you are awed, they mock.
[37:13] When reminded, they take no heed.
[37:14] When they see proof, they ridicule it.
[23:66] My proofs have been presented to you, but you turned back on your heels.
[31:7] And when our revelations are recited to the one of them, he turns away in arrogance as if he never heard them, as if his ears are deaf. Promise him a painful retribution.
The reactions of both believers and disbelievers are clearly expressed in 74:31 in dealing with the mathematical miracle of Quran:
[74:31] We appointed angels to be guardians of Hell, and we assigned their number (19) (1) to disturb the disbelievers, (2) to convince the Christians and Jews (that this is a divine scripture), (3) to strengthen the faith of the faithful, (4) to remove all traces of doubt from the hearts of Christians, Jews, as well as the believers, and (5) to expose those who harbor doubt in their hearts, and the disbelievers; they will say, "What did GOD mean by this allegory?" GOD thus sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills. None knows the soldiers of your Lord except He. This is a reminder for the people.
There are many examples from the previous generations set by God for the believers to analyze this pattern of arrogant behavior. They benefit from them and learn how to deal with the overwhelming misguidance surrounding them. These examples also help them understand how detrimental it is not to kill every bit of ego they have. Rejection, disbelief, oppression, persecution... all the way to rage and killing are very common reactions to the truth. Characterizing the miracles as magic, old repeated tales and/or fabricated lies is also very typical (8:31, 2:87, 7:133, 27:13, 5:110, 39:59, 40:56, 34:43). History repeats itself, and the narrated facts about the previous generations come alive in our present and will continue to throughout the future, until the Day of Judgment.
[2:118] Those who possess no knowledge say, "If only GOD could speak to us, or some miracle could come to us!" Others before them have uttered similar utterances; their minds are similar. We do manifest the miracles for those who have attained certainty.
Interesting enough, some hypocrites demand proofs but as soon as they witness them they reject them. The people of Hood blamed him for not presenting any proofs and that was their excuse to disbelieve. God has sufficiently warned the believers against these mentalities so that they do not get disappointed by their behavior. He has advised them to disregard these individuals and not waste any energy with them or take their rejection personally:
[11:53] They said, "O Hood, you did not show us any proof, and we are not abandoning our gods on account of what you say. We will never be believers with you.
[17:89] We have cited for the people in this Quran all kinds of examples, but most people insist upon disbelieving.
God's Messengers Challenged
[17:90] They said, "We will not believe you unless you cause a spring to gush out of the ground.
[17:91] "Or unless you own a garden of date palms and grapes, with rivers running through it.
[17:92] "Or unless you cause masses from the sky, as you claimed, to fall on us. Or unless you bring GOD and the angels before our eyes.
[17:93] "Or unless you own a luxurious mansion, or unless you climb into the sky. Even if you do climb, we will not believe unless you bring a book that we can read."* Say, "Glory be to my Lord. Am I any more than a human messenger?"
And God responds:
[15:14] Even if we opened for them a gate into the sky, through which they climb;
[15:15] they will say, "Our eyes have been deceived. We have been bewitched."
[6:7] Even if we sent down to them a physical book, written on paper, and they touched it with their hands, those who disbelieved would have said, "This is no more than clever magic."
[6:35] If their rejection gets to be too much for you, you should know that even if you dug a tunnel through the earth, or climbed a ladder into the sky, and produced a miracle for them (they still would not believe). Had GOD willed, He could have guided them, unanimously. Therefore, do not behave like the ignorant ones.
[6:33] We know that you may be saddened by what they say. You should know that it is not you that they reject; it is GOD's revelations that the wicked disregard.
In conclusion, the disbelievers are left heedless, in the dark. Their ego prevents them from seeing, hearing, perceiving or benefiting from God's reminders. They live in the Satanic deception that they really know it all and that they are in no need for any proofs or reminders. They avoid them. God's revelations and proofs were never meant for such hardened hearts. They are meant for the believers who fully appreciate them and eagerly hear and obey with overjoyed and reassured hearts. Because they constantly strive to subdue their egos, God's reminders and proofs guard them against deviation. God's reminders and proofs augment their faith and increase their reverence. God has presented both patterns of reactions. Believers are the beneficiaries! By such explicit presentation, they become alert and prepared to deal with those who reject the truth and they also learn how to win the life-long battle with their egos.
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
